well ice both the above are right, Phil is right in his method of completing the job and 8 doubles is right in saying the door could drop, so unless you know someone who is handy with tools you could check b&q they do a pre finished oak Shaker style door for £60 its a laminated oak so that's why its quite cheap and yes it has glass panel's, you can paint it if you want or try freecycle.   sorry ice like phil im too far away
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Thank you.  £60 sounds reasonable. ;)

Nothing would sag as the glass below would support the weight, no need to put silicone anywhere, it is not structural and will support nothing, it would need to be put in using putty otherwise it would rattle! any panes below 80o mm have to be safety glass by law. I could do the job for you in about an hour but im not exactly local!
I would recommend saving up for the new door, just remember two golden rules, doors are made handed, its marked underneath, and use a sharp chisel to let your hinges in otherwise it will look like a mouse has chewed it.
If you want any more advice you can pm me if you want

Thank you for the thought Leaf.   I'm going to save up and have them all replaced with modern ones.  Getting fed up with constantly making do and mending stuff.

Nothing would sag if you went to the glazier and got a piece of glass cut the exact size of the opening.
Then you could go back and get a bit more taken off so it actually goes in and fill the gap with mastic. After you`d done the job in an hour would you go back and put it right for nothing a couple of months later. I never need to. :)

What?
If i where doing the job then i would, buy/cut glass the correct size so it wouldn't sag, a previous post suggested putting mastic around the glass to stop it sagging!
I dont know who you are but i have been a shipwright/joiner long enough to build a matching door from scratch in a day.

To make a matching door in a day is not a problem , over 35years as a carpenter and joiner and an internal door i was altering would get a squirt of silicone and glazing beads , no putty in sight. I fixed enough doors over the years to know they do sag.

Only back for an hour and your getting backs up , you don`t hang about do you. :D :D
