Drying onions
« on: July 03, 2009, 17:05 »
I had followed all of the instructions on here, was really pleased that my onions were drying on top of a pallet at the plot.  Then, rain!

I went and picked them up and, without a shed, tried to work out how to get them in the sunshine when it is sunny and out of the rain when it is rainy.  This is my solution, although who knows where the clothes can dry now!!

I've got one of those clothes thingy's, that's a great idea, I was in and out checking for rain yesterday while my shallots were drying.  I'll be lifting my onions and garlic soon so I'll use your method in future

Thanks  :)

My shallots were drying on a pallet until I saw the black clouds approaching and had a similar idea  ;)

Thanks for that, I'll do the same on my balcony as opposed to leaving them at the mercy of the weather at the lottie.
Just run in and out with the whole thing like we do with our drying... :tongue2:

Fantastic idea - I use that one at home.   Cheers!
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

Fantastic!  I've got a washing line in my garage for drying muddy outdoor gear but never thought of pegging onions to it!  I don't think I'd leave them in there long as there's been at least one mouse nest in a drawer (I foolishly left some bird food in an easily-nibbled bag) but I reckon they should be all right just while they're drying a bit.

Drying onions and garlic really don't need sun to dry them, just good air circulation. In fact, too much sun can still scald the bulbs. If it rains, just tuck it into the greenhouse I see behind  or in the back doorway (or cellar).

I hung my onions and garlic on lines strung on the shed.
No chance of moving them when it rained.
Will they still be OK?
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

My onions are still quite small, cant wait for them to be that size so I can use your drying techniques. Will be too embarassed to hang them up if they dont get any bigger.

I lifted my onions and garlic yesterday and they are now hanging up in my two sheds. It's the first time I have grown either of them and I have been quite pleased with the results. The onions we will probably get round to using but there is sooooo much garlic that I think we'd better give some away  :)

The sheds did smell nice first thing this morning though!  :D

Use of a spare paramotor cage in the onion drying process has to get some points at least for being a bit different!

Hamster I've edited your long link so it now fits on the page, but it only takes you to a log-on page so I don't think others can see it anyway  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
