Mould in raised beds
« on: July 02, 2009, 22:02 »
Just discovered mould in my big raised beds.  Ive been watering heavily due to weather - the soil needed it.  Maybe due to beds being very full and sheltered...

Had to pull some little gems tonight which were rotting (looked beautifully healthy not 24 hours ago) and Ive noticed some flowers on my courgettes have randomly fallen off after just around 1 days flowering.  Weird.

Any thoughts?  It was all going so well!

i would say slow down on watering , just cause its dry on top its doesnt always mean its that dry underneath . plants can go sometime without being water and if u do need to water then hold the hose at the base of the plant and hold for 10 secs or so i do that an my plants are in perfect condition .

we have ppl on my site that barely water an they get really good crops .

Perhaps things didn't need as much water as you thought they did
I rely on the finger test.....poke your finger in a couple of inches, if you can feel damp then don't water :)  my soil can look like dust on the top but it is still dark underneath :)
The male flowers on courgettes don't hang around once they've opened, don't think it's a problem, i'm still getting courgettes to eat :D

Sounds like too much watering to me too

Just because its like a dust bowl on top doesnt mean its dry underneath.  Try sticking your finger about an inch under the soil.  If its moist its OK

We have been watering every other day in the hot weather but some of the older fellas down our allotment hardly ever water and they get great crops. It can be very easy to over water but like the others said stick your finger in you will soon know for sure!!!!!!
