brassicas and hedgehogs
« on: July 02, 2009, 20:28 »
Hello,
Something has been eating my brassicas. Thought it was pigeons and possibly my chickens. So we netted them.
Yesterday i found a rather large hedgehog stuck in the net. very cute and very beatrix potter!
We managed to untangle it and i let it go. We have a walled garden so i figured it lived in the garden and they are useful for eating slugs.
Today i think i saw it moving across the garden and was surprised as i thought they were nocturnal... could it have been a slow rabbit?
Anyway it looks like something is still getting to the brassicas through the net which has quite large holes 2"x2".
Could it be the hedgehog? Whatever it is, it doesn't like red cabbage!
Any advice on hedgehogs and brassicas would be very welcome.

Usually if a hedgehog is out in the day there's something wrong with it  :(  Perhaps he's nibbling the brassicas because he's thirsty ?
Try putting a bowl of water out for it and a bowl of cat food if you can.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Thanks. He might be a bit sore from the netting around his neck. I'll get some cat food and some water out for him tonight.

if the hedgehog has any signs of injuries then you may well need to get it to a vet as they are now protected ,,, but i got to say your lucky i would die to see a hedgehog back in my garden but its been many years since i have seen one  :(

Get in contact with your local hedgehog rescue 1st rather than a vet, they will be able to give specialist advice.

Looby if you want hog's then again get in touch with your local rescue they usually have hogs to rehome.

Don't worry about fleas hedgehog fleas don't like human flesh their a bit fussy  ::) unlike cat and dog fleas which seem to love taking a quick bite  >:(

i did think of that but i wont be able to trust my pup if he ever saw one i tend to get up during the night an let them out .also i did want to fence in my allotment plot an have one live there full time but they travel dont they so that wont work and i dont think the council would allow it , would be fun though as i could rehome injured ones that cant go back to the wild  :D
