Hot Hens
« on: July 02, 2009, 19:07 »
Hi everyone.
It's ages since I've been on here...thought I'd got the hang of hen keeping up til now, but am wondering about this hot weather we're having.
Should I be doing anything special for my girls?
They've got fresh water everyday and an extra dish of it hanging on the side of their run.
They aren't eating many pellets but gobble up fresh food.
I sprayed down part of their run with cold water and they seemed to enjoy scratching in the cool, damp chippings.
One of them seems to spend a lot of the time with her beak open. I've only noticed them do this if stressed. Is she doing it to try to cool down?
Has anyone got any suggestions of other things I could do to help them get through the heat??
Thanks in advance

She's panting, make sure they have plenty of shade and it seems daft but I put cool water in with ice cubes...they seem to enjoy it:)

i make mine mud pools and they love it  :D :D leave the hose running in a part of the run that u dont really need to walk on an give them a lovley massive puddle . i lefted mine running into the water tough the other week by mistake an i had 22 very happy birds now i do it daily .

Thank you....I'll keep the hose running for a bit longer when I spray the run down. They've taken a liking to having an extra pot of water to sup from as well as the usual drinking container.

Nice to be back in touch with other 'Hennie' people!

Hi another way to keep them cool when its hot is to freeze a two litre bottle of water and put that into the pen / coop  outside they will lay against it , inside the coop it helps to bring the temp down if the coop gets hot.

I'm hoping this is just a sign of hot hens - my girls (warrens, but not the silkies) are during the day holding their wings out from there body. I've checked for mites etc and powdered and frontlined so its not that. Is anyone else experiencing this?
