i'm still not able to work out male/female he she hen thing but what a great website foxy, thank you.  And i had no idea araucana's were classed as a rare breed??

Here are my 4 Araucanas.  They are just over 12 weeks old now.  I think the first black which is a barred black is a hen and the other one a cockerel.  Same with the Lavenders.  The barred looks like a hen and the other a cockerel.

Oh thanks for the great photos! Well what i think I need to do is upload photos of each of the 3 'hens' i have - you might all see why i've been confused.com

Well the pics were only to show the comb or lack of it!  But they are lovely!  All fluffy and hyper!!!  I got them from Archie's little gems in St Neots.  Jason the breeder is very caring and loves his chooks and ducks, they are not just for making money with him.

And the father's of these 4 little darlings were imported all the way from Peru, so of good pure stock, wonderful for breeding!

Hey Chookster, you could try emailing a pic of your 'hens' to Jason at archies Little Gems.  He is in the Poultry Suppliers listings.  Chickenlady did and he was kind enough to answer her questions!  He is very knowledgeable about Araucanas.

We've met him and he really is genuine.

LOL when Chickenlady had 2 of the Araucanas from me that we got from Jason, she picked out a lavender and what we thought was a blue one.  Well he/she started to grow and CL wasn't sure if it was a blue or a barred black. Neither said Jason, its a cuckoo you are a lucky girl!!!!

see now if i was sensible i'd have bought cream legbars  but i like not being sensible. It's more of an enjoyable ride and a good guessing game!

That's why I like raising hybrids for people.  With the brown ones we are guaranteed all girls as they are colour sexed at hatching, and with the amerlinks if we do get the odd cockerel, we can tell by the time they are around 3 weeks old.

But I love the little araucanas and the Exchequer Leghorns we got too, as well as the Appenzellars which Brian doesn't like!  But funnily enough, he has take a shine to Enery the cuckoo silkie!!

Having only hatched quails before i was shocked at how big and woolly they looked Grannie.  And MY - what BIG FEET they have!
