Fleece
« on: April 16, 2007, 18:17 »
I have had some of my pots under fleece cover (although not right now after such a lovely weekend!) but was noticing that when watering them, the water slides off instead of going through.  Am I wrong in understanding that the water should drip through?

The reason I ask is because I am keeping the fleece on my carrots permantly, but as we come into the carrot fly "season" I want to limit the amount of times I lift the fleece.

A deluge will run off but nice gentle rain gets through.  Your watering can is a deluge.

Well, tonight I tried out the fine mist setting on hose on my fleece covered carrots.  At first the water gathered on top, but then when I looked again it had gone and sure enough it goes through!

So the answer is water does go through fleece, so long as it is not too strong a powerful selection on hose.

... I keep my carrots under fleece, only really ever lifting the fleece to check for germination, weed, plant another row alongside or to pick baby carrots.

WG is right, the rain and a fine mist will get through ... carrot fly will not!

... as you think, as onions are supposed to deter carrot fly ... just whack the fleece over the lot ...
