Er ... plant them in the ground, green side up.      

I'd go straight for their final position now, especially with the soft Irish climate you'll have.

If they are bare rooted soak them in a bucket of water for a couple of hours before planting, firm them in WELL  :!:

Compost is preferable since you will be adding lime (won't you).   Lime and manure don't go together.
