I don't grow swede good as peapod will tell you.  :(

However, you're right with the sowing time, swede shouldn't be big enough yet to think about cracking, and that may be the problem!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You dont grow swede well because of the nasty club root  DD :(

It is due to inconsistent watering, they do crack if they dont get enough

I just planted out my swede plants a week or so ago;  they're about 3-4 inches high and won't be swelling up until autum / winter just in time for Christmas.

I don't sow them until the end of July, i didn't even know that you could sow them early  Even sowing in july i could still pull some to eat in October, and i wouldn't think you would want to eat them before that

Mine are about 3 inches across...I sowed them end of may (I think) as I always sow them as soon as I can and havent had a problem. Im careful with watering them.  I will sow some more next week, but all can be left in to pick when I need them. I usually start harvesting about October time. I love swede and carrots mash, so can never have enough  :D

DD instead of the sour grapes you've obviously eaten :) have you tried swede Marion ? It's supposed to be clubroot resistant...
Quote
Rely on Marian to produce a heavy crop of splendidly flavoured, finely textured globe roots which are resistant to both clubroot and mildew.
It's what i always grow and they are nice (but i haven't got clubroot so couldn't confirm how resistant they are) worth a try?

Yes.

Mind you. That was six more than the rest of the plot holders put together.

Stuck my swede seed in about a week ago and now have thick row of two-leaf clover.... so I guess that means they've germinated!!

My dad tells me he couldn't grow swede successfully on "our" plot.... so I am now waiting to see what goes wrong / when and why!  ::)

Ever the optomist!  :tongue2:

For what its worth from me  :D

Keep them well watered and well weeded
Remove yellow leaves immediately
Feed once a fortnight or so with Miracle Gro
Make sure you stick with a seed that works for your plot (which I cant remember right now, typical)
Give them plenty of room...squeezing them in is a false economy

I grow in paper pots because I use a lot of swede and dont want to risk it, but my turnips have been great with germination, so am direct sowing my swede next week. I will back up with pp though
