Onion Fly
« on: June 28, 2009, 20:02 »
I spotted an onion fly suspiciously hanging around my onions but I couldn't catch it to kill it. Is there anything I can do to prevent it without using chemicals ?

I know what they were as I had my book with me. All I want to know is how to deter them from my patch.

Bombers was replying to

and to others that may not know what they look like.
Give it a couple of hours and be nice to people and maybe someone will have an answer.

If you read back, Bombers had posted the picture in response to smc's question about what onion fly looked like.

Your post after that, whilst I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, came across as impatient and a rebuff.  I think Ruff was just pointing that out.

People will answer your question as soon as they can, if they know the answer.  Occasionally threads incorporate other questions or go off topic for a while, but if you wait then you tend to get an answer  :D

Cannot see anything other then chemicals that would help. Especially as you have seen them present and so may have already laid eggs. No idea but I would guess that a systemic insecticide is necessary that would mean the onions will have to be left of a period for the chemicals to get out of the onions.

In response/defence to the apparent "impatience" Hubballi did know what he(?) had seen, and was asking what could be done about them. The question was not "What are these, are they onion fly?"

What do they look like was someone elses question and although related could be considered off topic.

I would have thought that asking what they looked like was a legitimate question related to the topic.  Going off topic is more like asking what the weather is like in Mumbai at this time of year. :)

Firstly, I think companion planting (carrotts) deters Onion fly. But I'm not sure how to treat it once established.  :(Perhaps someone else more knowledgeable can point you in the right direction. :)

secondly,
