Opinions on this air layer?
« on: June 28, 2009, 14:19 »
Hi,

I started an air layer on a branch of a Beech tree for later development of a bonsai. I started it in March (IIRC) and this is it today, I just wondered if is developing correctly? There does not seem to be any root like projections currently, but there is a ring of new growth as can be seen.

Cannot see exactley what the state is.
Air layering for a Beech will take about 12 weeks, although there should not be a problem, they are fairly well suited it the method.

Information I have says: Make two 3-5 cm long on either side and dab with rooting compound. Insert something to stop the bark closing up and cover with spagnum moss. Wrap the "bundle" in plastic and then seal the ends with tape. Leave.

I have the idea from the pictures that you may have removed the bark all round, then wrapped in moss and plastic. Just cannot make it out.

As you say, there don't appear to be anything resembling roots developing. I've never air layered beech, and Annie suggests 12 weeks. That seems quite quick from my experience with rhodos etc IMHO but as I said, I've not done beech so am not disagreeing

Have you cut the bark off all the way around? Or did you do it like Annie says, which sounds similar to what I with other shrubs.

Interested to know what others think on this one  ??? ???

I completely cut the bark to the wood around the whole circumference of the branch.

Hi,

Just a quick update if anyone is interested. I discovered that my airlayer is working and has sprouted some roots.  :tongue2: It's a fascinating tecnique and a bit of an experiment for me. I will leave it until it falls dorment and cut it down and plant it up in the winter for bonsai training. I also have a nice wysteria I will do the same to next season.  :)
