Sexing chicks
« on: June 27, 2009, 21:22 »
I have three chicks and I think that two are cocks. Two have like a little skin tag, in what I would imagine to be the appropriate spot.

If they are cocks, I will keep one, but the other will be available FOC. They are Orpingtons.

Orpingtons are very hard to sex.
You think there are hens one day then the next they look like cockerels  :tongue2:
How old are they?

Chicks genitalia is all internal so you won't be able to tell by any external skin tags. Vent sexing is possible but can cause damage in inexperienced hands.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

My 5 orpingtons all turned out to be girls, but it was almost impossible to sex them until they were quite big.  3 of them were always girls but the other 2 I couldn't decide.  Much easier now thy are all laying (or being broody)!

Usually the hens feather up a lot quicker than the cockerels at about 2 weeks old you can sort of tell, but only for a few days, but I have never been brave enough to get rid of the cockerels at that age, just in case

You found Polands easy   I found them an absolute nightmare. Only certain now they are four months old of what they are  ::) (and wouldn't surprise me now if the boy laid an egg and the girl crowed  )

Boys have a small "dome" and girls a big "dome" easy as that! Also boys heads when older are spikey and girls fluffy  ;)

i find sexing polands impossible, even at hatch they are not all the same size so domes are kind of irrelevent, i still have 2 i'm not sure the sex of, cara will tell you how old they are because i can't remember :D

Four months old now. Blackie has developed a boys head and Pudd is def a girl with her bonnet, but the 4 silver laced that came to you were impossible to tell. In fact only two I was ever certain on were your gold laced and Blackie - because they started chest bumping each other and stood out from the rest as arrogant little boys :) - but the rest were a mystery. Are the 2 both silver laced ones?

At least there's 3 girls in total, one boy and two maybes.... will have to wait to see if they crow or lay I guess. Keep waiting for Blackie to crow, he bok bok's at the ground when he finds treats for Pudd, but no crowing to date  :D
