Run out of plant pots
« on: June 25, 2009, 13:35 »
Does anybody have any suggestions for a good (reasonably priced) suplier of plastic plant pots for potting on. Having checked the supposed cheap shops like Wikinsons,
Poundstretcher and B & Q (and shriek in horror the Garden Centres), I've decided they are all a bit of a rip orff for value for money, and as I need lots could do with a good contact. Thanks (sorry if this should be elsewhere, but thought it would get a better response from the growers)

I found tescos direct quite cheap compared with other places I looked - mine were 40p for larger pots (I think about 20cm diameter).

Not sure if that would be that cheap if you needed a large amount though

I get most of mine from Freecycle now.  Can't recommend it enough for pots.  Have responded to posts but also put a 'wanted' on there once before buying and had a couple of respones to that too.

Most often they clutter up people's gardens so they are more than happy to get rid of them

I've bought from these http://www.thegardensuperstore.co.uk/ at the time they were the cheapest I could find for large pots. Price breaks for quantity too.

You might also want to remember all plant pots are not created equal. Cheap sometimes really is nasty. I bought 10ltr & 5ltr container pots, (Sankey) and 7cm & 9cm square pots (Tenku). All very good quality and I've not had 1 split yet (3 years).

Freecycle. And I get evryone at work to save the plastic boxes you get peaches and plums in - they last for ages and have holes in the bottom.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My local garden centre (Notcutts) has a big bin in the car park for plastic pots for recycling.  We have had dozens - either for ourselves or a local small nursery - free.

I believe that most large garden centres now offer pot recycling.

Cheers,

Gillie

You could ring around a few local landscape gardeners and ask them to they throw away pots.

I went to a talk recently where the landscape gardener was demonstrating how to put together hanging baskets/window boxes.

He had brought lots of plants to sell, when i asked him to take his empty pots, he said i was more than welcome he was sick trying to get rid of them.

If you go to the garden centre you might find they have a recycling area for unwanted pots and you can help yourself, thats what the one not far from me does, really good idea.

yeah I've got lots of medium sized pots too I don't use, whereabouts are you Barney?  Put your location in your profile, it helps at times like this.

Many thanks AndyRVTR and Grannie Annie. I'm up in North Staffs, so it probably wouldn't be viable on this occasion. Lardmans link for the garden superstore looks promising tho, so will probably check it out next week. Thanks for your kind offers tho
