Parsnips and Swede seedling!!
« on: June 25, 2009, 11:51 »
I have not long started out in the world of growing my own vegetables, although i grew up with my father owning an allotment, having to do the work yourself is a different story!!
Anyway, i very stupidly weeded my Parsnips and Sweed patch the other day (which took me a few hours!), and have just realised that i have mistakenly pulled out any seedlings and left only weeds!
can any one describe what these seedlings look like? as i have just sowed the Parsnips and Sweeds again so i have hopefully not done it too late!!

Many thanks

Hi Johnwoots and welcome to the forum.
We've all been there, and mistaken seedlings for weeds. ::) :) Not too late to start some more, although the snips won't be whoppers!
Here's an image of the snip seedlings

and one of the swede

Just generally, for anyone's interest. I find the google image search CLICK HERE a very useful resource for this purpose.
Good Luck. :)

Many thanks for the pictures and the link.  will most certainly use it as i am sure it wont be the last time i have this issue. we must learn from our mistakes eh!!

it is my first season growing so i am not expecting everything to grow perfectly and its good to make mistakes now! :D

Thanks once again

haha i did a similar thing.

someone wisely sugested sprinkling spinach and lettuce seed bettween my slow growing crops as abit of a space saver !!!

Great! *sprinkle* *sprinkle*

Untill i realised that because these random lettuce and spinach weren't in nice rows etc i have no idea how to tell them apart from the weeds growing in the same location.

In the end i pulled everything green up haha ... planted spinach and lettuce into seed trays and i now transplant them inbettween my slow growing crops as soon as the are big enough to recognise.

Stupid seedlings .. all look the same when they are little.

Don't despair about the Parsnips either.  Individual seeds sometimes take a long time to germinate so can pop up quite unexpectedly when you think there is no further hope.
