Power cut
« on: June 25, 2009, 08:00 »
We have been given warning of the electricity going off, possibly all day. The problem being we have chicks that will only be 2 weeks old. Any ideas how I can keep them warm or do you think they will be old enough  and warm enough if this warm weather continues?
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Hi,
They should be fine this time of year.   :) , if the power cut is not going to be for a few days, you might be better off raising the lamp slightly each day so they are not so dependant on the heat.
I know someone who takes them off heat completely at 2 weeks.

Hello Sassy,

Do you have any hot water bottles?  If so, wrap filled hot water bottles in an old sheet or woollie and place in pen.
Altenatively, if you have some bricks or stones which you can heat up, they will help keep the chicks warm when wrapped likewise.

Or You could sit with them in your lap all day.  What a way to spend a day!   :tongue2: ::)

cathangirl.

PS I have 11 chicks with 2 hens and they are buzzing about all over the place from the hens, with no apparent harm.  Mind you, it has been very sunny down here.  The Mums are handy for a quick warm up though.

An expensive way would be to buy a mains invertor which uses the power from your car battery and then converts it to AC 240volts these come in all sizes from about £40-£300

Try and google the words  "Mains Invertor"

I had one of these years ago when they cut our electric off for a few days and i ddint want the incubator going cold. Sadly i loaned it out and forgot who too.

Grab a polystyrene incy off ebay, think they are £24 they run off 12v so can be run off your car battery and use very little current to hold temp.

Luckily, we have a generator, so if the power goes off again at least I can plug the incy into it!  But what is the brooder like Sassy?  other ideas are good, or you could wrap teh brooder n an old duvet or blanket or something if you felt they need the extra warmth, but hopefully it will be a nice sunny day when they cut your power.
