Rhubarb forest - humble beginnings to this!
« on: June 24, 2009, 18:35 »
About a month ago I posted what I think was my first photo on ths site of my rhubarb seedlings popping up through Vermiculite. They have now progressed so well that I've started potting the first sown into pots. Chuffed to bits...only another 900 to go!

If I can find a field maybe, but I love the stuff and want to make everything from pies, to chutneys to wine with it and have enough for the freezer too for the rest of the year. I like growing lots of things, but its the one thing I think I'd like to be good at, and its become addictive. Got more seedlings coming through now, and several more packets to plant ....

Do you intend to grow anything else  ::)

Seriously, well done - I've never seen rhubarb seedlings before and their leaves look so different from the mature version.

Did you grow them indoors, I can't recall whether you said?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oh yes , I'll still grow lots of things, but love rhubarb.
They've all been raised outdoors, as I've nowhere else, but the early ones you're looking at had plastic bags over them to keep the heat in until they sprouted. The current seedlings are "unprotected" and some have popped up in three days, but its a lot warmer now. It'll only be the odd stick that I can take from each plant next year, followed by another year of light croping, so its a long term project and if a field isn't forthcoming, they should survive in bigger pots. I've got three varieties on the go and am hoping for another variety if I can sweet talk a seed merchant later in the year.

Do you realise how much space a mature plant takes up BR.  I'd say a good square metre each.

It really will take up a huge amount of space

Get some of those gorgeous pampered seedlings sold..you'll make a fortune!

Custard? Sloworm, can you point me in the direction of a seed merchant who does it? ;)

Oh yes, I already have lots of mature crowns supplying me with a few pies or so a year, so am well aware of the space needed But I've got me feelers out for a fallow farmer's field, and even if it takes me a year to find the right one, I'm happy to wait whilst the seedlings mature

Guess if I can't find a field, I'll have to sell them peapod, but I'll get more for them if they are a year or two old I suppose, going on how much I paid for my crowns

Sounds like youve got good plans there. Fingers crossed for the field

You gotta have a vision....this years my test year...if I can do it this year and then fail next year, I can at least fall back on my first year 's efforts ;) :D
