Probably a daft question....but how deep do the holes need to be please?

JohnI want the leeks - in theory - about pencil thick before I plant them out. This involves dibbing a hole with an old spade shaft about 6" deep. I drop them into the hole and water well leaving the soil to fall in naturally. This blanches the stem so you get a nice white shaft.
Usually they are being planted in June or July.
Hope this helps :)

I sow mine in a 12inch diametre pot and plant out when drinking straw/pencil thick. I use an old spade shaft as a dibber and drop them into holes 6-8 inches deep after trimming the tops and cutting roots back to about an inch or so. Got about 75 from one pot.

I startde my leeks off in a 9'' pot. They are about 8'' tall but very thin. The root system is strong tho but now I am wondering what to do with them for time being. Should I plant them out as they are, thin them out,or leave them a while longer?

Big fluffed out roots wont go down the hole!!
Dead right.
My method is to trim them by about half, then dip them in a bucket of liquid mud. They drop down like bullets.
+1 My mud is made with Maxicrop seaweed extract (to the crrect dilution) and soil, gives them a cracking start.
