Boozed-up slugs
« on: June 21, 2009, 18:04 »
I am going to try lager traps to catch some of the slugs DECIMATING my veggies. My chickens can't be free-range but they're on grass in a big run and moved regularly. I give them slugs from midnight hunts but can I give them DRUNK slugs? Will they start partying and falling off their perch?

I think most of the alcohol (if not all) would have evaporated off.

That's funny I was only wondering the same thing myself this afternoon! In the garden centre today I found a book called100 ways to kill a slug and one of the suggestions was to put oat bran flakes around the plants. Apparently the slugs love them but they absorb moisture from inside the slugs and expand causing the slugs to explode! I'm going to try it tonight and they should be safe for the chooks to eat in the morning.

i'll happily find a way to trap the slugs of anight an give them to the girls .

Fourteen slugs in the slug pubs which is 14 less eating my veg! My three chickens devoured them and haven't started slurring their speech or wanting a vindaloo yet so doesn't seem to affect them?

If you want to keep slugs away from your veggies and live near a preserved Steam Railway, go to the yard and ask if you can have some clinker.  Then make pretty borders around your plants, it goes a gorgeous slate-purple-grey when it rains, so it doesn't look unattractive, and the slugs won't crawl over it because the spikiness of it hurts their bellies, so you have to make sure you have a continuous border.  It doesn't do any damage to the ground or you when putting it down either.  It's just the lumpy stuff from where they clean out the smoke box after a turn.  Only downside is, you won't catch the slugs to be able to give to the girlies.

yes but can they still walk in a straight line? and I would hide any car keys just in case........
I got totally absorbed in something else last night so forgot to put down the oat bran, so no exploding slugs in my garden yet.

You really must let us all know about this oat bran slug trap. It would be cheaper than beer, the slugs are ready-stuffed and I'm worried about impending chicken alcoholism. :D

Well I put the bran down last night and rushed out this morning expecting to see exploded slugs everywhere. There was just 1 pathetic little thing still on the garden and it was a bit..............sluggish. So unless they crawled away to their hiding holes and then exploded it was a bit of a disappointment. :(  Guess it's back to the beer then.
