(probably a silly) Question Number 1
« on: April 13, 2007, 16:58 »
Right, some of my early spuds (arran pilot) are showing through
I know it is them, because they are in rows and the dandelions aren't

But they are not all coming up at once which I really expected them to
Do I just earth up the leaves that are showing or the whole row???
And when do I stop?? When do I allow the foliage to grow through and leave it to develop into the big plant I have seen in fields in Ormskirk?????
You can take a horse to water....but a pencil must be lead!!
(No chemicals ......yet!)

Wait till they're all through, then earth them up till just the tips are showing, and if they get nipped by frost, dont worry, they soon recover, wait till they're about 8-10 inches high, then earth them up for the final time, thats what i do anyway, and i've found it adequate :)  :)

Yes earth once they apear, this time of year it is to protect the foliage from frost mainly and later cos you get more taters, usually by the time the frosts have gone you can stop.Amasing how a little pleading will get you answers, this site is much busier than most but at this time of year you may have to wait for, ooh, minutes `cos we`re out there planting/sowing and pottering, and generally getting sidetracked....
