HELP - re incubating and power loss
« on: June 19, 2009, 08:19 »
Hi guys

i have a load of quail eggs under incubation and they're due to hatch this weekend.

The thing is, I'm on a metre and last weekend I hadn't realised that my electric had got low and was away last weekend overnight and when i came home from work last sunday, i went to turn the eggs and they were cold.  then i realiesd i'd run out of electric.

i'm not sure how long the power had been off but it could have been anything up to 24hrs although the stuff in the freezer seemed ok and we've had no probs with the food.

If eggs are left for such a long time is there any chance they'll still make it?? Anyone with experience of this during a power cut or similar.

I'm also asking because a friend has pheasants laying eggs in their garden and a cat scared off the hen while she was sitting on them and she didn't return for a good few hours. They're animal lovers too and a a bit worried.

At least if mine do hatch I will have my lovely little babies and can reassure them too.  I guess it's up to mother nature now.  Lesson learnt my end.

It really is impossible to say, eggs amaze me, I've had some that felt stone cold due to being pushed out of the nest that have gone on to hatch perfectly healthy chicks :)

Just going to be a case of wait and see I'm afraid.

Best of luck, let us know what happens :)

I know someone who had a power cut for 24 hours and they said it was the best hatch they had ever had.

Fingers crossed

we had a powercut once sometime during the night, by the time we'd woken up and realised, the duck eggs were cold (some had already externally pipped, and some had hatched) we put them in front of the gas fire to warm them up (taking care not to overheat them) we lost a fair few eggs but still ended up with 22 ducklings.

 oh well that's hopeful guys then isn't it. Well I shall let you know.  I guess they may be delayed a little if they cooled down for a while. Fingers crossed then...

Really pleased to say they have been hatching and running around since sunday!! Still a few to go - they were just a couple of days late in the end :D
