Some of my cauliflower's have the cali bit in the middle, i have no idea what its called, but i do want to protect it from the local birds/old boys/rats etc. the plants are pretty big. any suggestions?

It's called the curds. Hoops or canes or wooden frames, and netting it's the only way

curds ay, ive learnt something new. A giant net tunnel then? they are pretty big curds so im quite impressed even though i thought they were wasted a couple weeks ago.

Oh just remembered bend some of the big leaves over the top to keep them white

I have used old net curtains on a broken frame of a geenhouse (one of those 29.00 jobbies) I used the top part so it stands about 3-4ft.  I then used duck tape to sew the nets together.  It seems to work, the caterpillars have not managed to find them yet!!!  It lets water in, dried quickly and the sunshine is also good.  I have then put tent pegs to hold it down and pots around the corners.

fleece!! keeps the cabbage whites off as well.
