Got a bargain today
« on: April 12, 2007, 21:53 »
I paid a visit to my local Homebase store to buy 1/2 dozen bags of compost. I noticed a pallet of 80 litre bags, quite a few had rips in them I pointed this out to the shop assistant who said if I wanted them I could have them at a reduced price. I picked out 6 bags and only had to pay £10.80 result or what?  :D
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Hate to tell you this but I get  7 tonnes for £35.00  :)

That's about  9,174 litres.  You do need a bit of space. Seriously, well done - good deal.

It's surprising how far it doesn't go. I mix a barrow load per square yard in the general soil and plant the potatoes in trenches full.  End of the day, it's a cheap way of me really improving my soil.

Hello - I don't think he'll go that far - most of the price is delivery I think. Hulking great lorry load. He might know someone in the same business (making compost) though so give him a call - Name's Steve Bloor and his number is mobile 07759 145967 or by email to stevebloor@uwclub.net. He's a farmer so I wouldn't ring late :)

Thanks John, I'll get in touch with Steve he may know someone in our area. I'll try an email first . :) Is it good enough to use for seedlings or do you just use it to improve the soil.

It's a little more coarse than humax so I would suggest not for seedlings. Great for beans, potatoes etc.

Steve told me the difference was that commercial bagged compost  was riddled through a slightly finer mesh and then nutrient balanced.  I think it's a wonderful buy and you can always sieve it yourself down to a finer level.

I got 4 bags (80 litres) for £10.00 at Wickes this afternoon, really pleased with the bag that I have started using.

... I've found the ultimate bargain ... my son has started working at a local nursery on a Saturday and the owner says I can have his 20% staff discount ...   ... reeeeeeeeeeesult!

I got three bags (too heavy for me to lift) of well rotted farmyard manure this afternoon for £4.80 ... and this is the real stuff tied with what my father used to called binder twine ...  :D

And four lavender plants for £4 the lot ... chubby plants in 5" pots .... not sure how he got the price to £4 though cos they were £2.50 each in the first place.

Just think I could actually have a teenager who saves me money!!
