There was an earlier post on this one, and I have also had leaves going brown, but the fruits are still growing and ripening - there must be an explanation for it, but because of the heat we had, I sought of wondered if the leaves were shutting down above the fruit so the plant could put all its engergy into the ripening  / reproductive process, as its only happening above or around the upperfruit bearing stems.

Someone will probably give a more scientific reply - I'm not a scientist :D

I have had the same thing happen - the first time it's occurred. It's not all of the canes either. I put it down to some sort of stress, perhaps the warm spell earlier made the leaves more susceptible?? I replanted my raised bed with the same canes so I was worried that I had inadvertantly done something to them. I't bleating down now so will see if it continues but I have been watering well.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Raspberries are prone to a number of fungal diseases which kill canes.  I find them quite difficult to establish and keep going and have lost a lot of varieties over the years.  I like raspberries a lot, so I keep on trying.

Ironically a row that I had given up on has suddenly revitalised and is carrying a good crop this year.

Cheers,

Gillie

It's also possible that you might have grubs in the soil eating the roots, which is a common problem for raspberries. More often its not enough manure and too much fertilizers.

Trillium mentions bug problems. I am new to Raspberries but have mine in an raised bed with weed cover fabric and bark on top to stop the weeds. Every time I water them you can see hundreds of small spider type bugs making a run for it. Should I need to take any action on this as I have planted a desease free variety thinking they would need mimum attention.

"Hey Gillie, do you want some of mine? "

Thanks Casey, I would love a trip to Alsace but it is a bit far.

Actually I seem to have problems with certain varieties.

I have a great hedge of Autumn Bliss, but the better flavoured Joan J disappeared.
The recently revived ones are Malling (I think) Promise, but the later, better flavoured Mallings have all upped and died as did various attempts at 'Glens'.

There are a few raspberries in the middle of the currant bushes too, but who knows what variety they are!

Allotment Jon - I don't think that raspberries will do well with weed suppressant fabric,  the new canes need to be able to grow up around the old ones.

Cheers,

Gillie
