Anybody growing Chokeberries?
« on: June 16, 2009, 13:51 »
Last summer i bought 4 chokeberry plants/bushes from Wilkinsons ,they were selling them off for 50p each.Well i nutured them for a while and they put on some decent growth and i planted them out in autumn. At the moment they are doing very well, but no sign of flower, which should appear in May.Does anybody grow these and if so when could i expect them to fruit, obviously not this year. But they do look really healthy.

Fraid not Peapod, these are shiny black berries, very bitter but fantastic as a juice.Apparently this is the fruit with more antioxidants than cranberry or blueberry. The bush has a somewhat waxy leaf, the plant is native to eastern  north america.

No, those are cape gooseberries and I'm growing those this year.  Never heard of chokeberries though... don't sound very appetising
