Grit confusion
« on: June 16, 2009, 13:06 »
I'm a little confused on the grit issue... I thought Oyster grit would be fine (and bought a 25kg sack of it  :D ), but re-reading my books and the threads on here, I realise I need Oyster grit for the minerals and another source of grit for digestion...

Is that right?

I appreciate this might seem a fairly basic question, but there you go, we all have to start somewhere!  :)

Oyster Shell for the calcium (minerals)
and
Grit for the digestion

If you have Oyster grit it most likely has both so you will be ok.

Does it have sand in it or grit. You should be able to see it visibly.

Just the oyster shell (unless the grit has sunk to the bottom of the sack, I'll have to have a delve). It was labelled as 'oyster grit'...

Does it just look like crushed shells?might just be oyster shell then. Poultry grit looks jsut like well grit, and is used as Ruff said to help grind up the food in the gizzard. if they free range on grass or gravel mixture they should pick up a fair amount of natural grit themselves. :)

It just looks like crushed shell. They are free ranging and doing a fair bit of scratching about, but I better pick up some grit as well.

Thanks!  :)

I've got a cheap-n-nasty (£6) 25kg bag of poultry grit that's crushed shell, limestone chippings and flint chippings.

They seem to be happy with it.

I use

http://www.gjwtitmuss.co.uk/GRITSANDMINERALS/pid1835/cid582/FINEOYSTERSHELLGRIT25KGSOSTREA.asp

Its the p&p that is a killer but its good stuff.

I'm sure that's the stuff I've got... I'll have to check when I get home.

Just phoned Mrs Scabs. It is the same stuff.

I really should have looked at the ingredients...  ::)

I think the sand must be lying at the bottom of the bag or something, because it all looked like shell to me.

Rough, if you pass by Rawtenstall, there's a place does this brand in town. PM me if you want details - seemed pretty cheap to me, I got 25kg sacks of pellet, mixed corn and the grit for a little over £20... so I guess the grit would have been around the £6 mark?

HI scabs - I noticed you said sand - the grit my birds get is poultry flint grit and looks like small gravel - I tell you I thought it was for laying roads when I opened the sack. Perhaps you should look for small rocks in with the shell  :D
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.
