Another strawberry question re the runners
« on: June 15, 2009, 15:08 »
I have just read on a previous post about strawberries that the runners are supposed to be cut off.

Is this right as I have just spent part of this morning putting the runners into small plant pots filled with compost whilst still attached to the main plant. I thought I would be able to use these next year.

I am a 1st time grower in case you hadn't guessed !!

That should be good, then later on in the year you can break them free. They will suck abit of goodness from this years crop but it nevers seems to slow down my variety of strawberries. In the end I have to stop taking the runners as I have too many and dont want the birds raiding my garden all day long.... 8)

I found out it takes 4-6 weeks for the runner to root at that point it can be cut from the parent plant.  My strawberrys are in a tower so they have to get quite long before they can reach a pot so ive only managed to do 2 so far.

Its hit and miss but you could cut off runners and root in some water then pot up.   Sometimes works sometimes not, if you have enought runners nothing to lose by trying some.

If this years strawbs have finished fruiting doesn't matter if you pin the runners down in a small pot still attached.
