Thanks for thinking so much about this.  WE have had the plot for about 6 years, and took it on when it was a bit derelict.  It had I believe been out of cultivation for about a year, maybe two.  We have not imported any soil.   They previous guy was a "tradtitional" allotmenter, who would prorbably turn in his grave as to how we run our site!

I did spot on the winter onion bed which is a bit away some insects which looked like larvae basking themselves on the wooden surrounds. But if you touched them they did move. They were grey, slightly armour plated looking and about 5mm long.  They were infact soft and when I squashed them they were yellow.  Tried to google them, but never found out what they were.

I will try to get some photos, but it has been a busy week this week and we can usually only get down to the site at weekends

Finally I have some photos and have spent ages trying to upload them, but they are too large!

The beans are looking sadder than ever, especially the climbing french beans

Happy to email picures if that helps

Looking at your photos it isn't the contaminated manure problem thats for sure.

That manure doesn't look well rotted to me, but then I can't see it too well, maybe its too fresh and burning the roots of the beans?

I know it isn't easy to see from the small piccies, but the manure was about 2 years old and went into the bed some weeks before the beans, but I would agree that they do look burned
