yes they sound like there ready, cant see em growing much more if you transplant them,i would sow some more straight into the ground
feed the soil not the plants

Are you sure you haven't been given chives?  Or bunching onions of some kind??

They are definitly spring onions with no real bulbs on them. They do look like big single chives and are in small modules in bunches of 5-6.

whilst we are on the subject of onions can any one tell me how often i should be watering my recently planted onion sets???

Thanks :D  :D

Okay - sounds like they've been multiply-sown into modules.   You can separate or simply plant the bunch as you prefer.  Separating will allow each to develop larger.

Onion sets : I'd say no water but others may disagree.  Dependent on local conditions really.

I bought some red onions today that were sold like the spring ones, sown in bunches in small plug plant sized container.  It said to plant them as a bunch but as the onions grow to a fairly large size I couldn't see how they would all grow so I have separated them out and planted singly a few inches apart. They'll need thinning probably when they are a bit bigger but at least there is something green in the beds!  I now though have loads of red onions left over, should've counted how many in a pot before buying them!
