My beech hedge is alive with these - does anyone know what they might be doing on it as it doesn't seem a likely food plant???

Very happy that they are in the garden though :D :D :D

Many build a nest in the ground, so you may have a small nest at the base of the hedge somwehere. ??? ???

What you have there is a Bombus terrestris: The buff-tailed bumblebee or large earth bumblebee is one of the most numerous bumblebee species in Europe. They are characterized by their white-ended abdomens. The queen is 2–2.7 cm long, while the workers are 1½–2 cm.

Such bees can navigate their way back to the nest from a distance as far away as 13 kilometres (8.1 mi), although most forage within 5km from their nest.

Yes - I think you are right with respect to the nest - googled it and found that they build in small rodent burrows and we have plenty of those!

The beech hedge has whitefly, is it possible that the bumble bees are cleaning up 'spilt' sap? They seem to work over the young leaves?
