We have found a large amount of black bugs on our broad beans, and the leaves on the gooseberries bush have been eaten.

According to our research we should use Permethrin or heptenophos on the broad beans, and fenithrothion or malathion on the gooseberrie bus.

What are the best retail products, or does anyone know of an alterniative.

If you could post a photo it would help.  The information you have is old.  Malathion has been banned for ages.

I would imagine a large amount of black bugs near the tops of the plants, feasting on the new growth, is probably the usual black fly, which is virulent this time of year. you can spray them with a solution of washing up liquid and water, but you'd have to double check quantities of washing up liquid to h2o, as i do it by sight. spray onto the little b******s and I usually rub it into the stems a bit. the idea is that it kills the blackfly and leaves a sticky residue on the plant to stop it reattaching. However, if there's heavy rain you might want to keep an eye on them, as it may have been washed off.
gooseberry leaves - no idea.
Those chemicals you mentioned sound quite scary - try the fairy first!!!!!
