Pea harvest
« on: June 13, 2009, 15:22 »
This is the second year I have grown peas, last year they were pathetic!

This year 'Wow' I am picking them every few days and I have already a full plastic container in the freezer!

Today I had a flashback to when I wore short trousers and sat on my grandads back step shelling peas fresh from his garden. 65 years later I am doing it on my own back step with my produce.

:) :tongue2:  :nowink:   ::) ::) ;) :)    :nowink:
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

Mine are being picked as mange tout.  I have now promised to leave them alone until they are proper peas though.

Do you need to blanch peas first or just freeze them??

Ive never tried to find out! They never make it home! I would freeze direct though, but Vals recipe pages know better than anything I would say
"I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. There is, you'll agree, a certain je ne sais quoi oh so very special about a firm young carrot" Withnail and I

Mine never make it as far as the kitchen either! My 2 year old keeps asking for them straight from the plant 'as a treat'  :D.

I remember a friend and I getting into serious trouble for completely stripping her dad's pea plants when we were about 7. We just sat and gorged ourselves until there wasn't one left.
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

A common problem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Am glad I read this - was going to ask the secret of getting the mangetouts actually into the house ... now I know I am not alone in scoffing the lot straight from the plant !!   :D

I'm very excited about my peas this year too, last year's were a dismal failure. I have some big pods fattening up on the plants, I've been very good about resisting the urge to pick them all whilst small! I'm growing Serpette Gillouteau from good old Real Seeds.
