The girl next door has spent hours putting her plot in order and her husband thought he'd suprise her by doing a spot of weeding and hoed all her carrot seedlings off - I don't think she spoke to him for about a week!

Beans are my usual victim  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

yes!  in my first year of allotmenteering I couldn't tell what parsnip seedlings looked like, and in amongst the speedwell, clover, bindweed and other nasties that were coming up, also in aparent rows so I couldn't tell them apart!

result... I hoed off the lot of them before realising what i had done! ::)

LOL  I did something similar when coming back from a 24 day holiday, luckily I asked a friend to come and tell me which was weed and what was parsnip.
I also admired my spinach on coming back until I realised my weeds looked the same.

I've only got 4 toes on one foot.

Only kidding!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm not dead keen on weeding so am apt to do the minimum which does allow things to decide what they are before I get there.  :D

I used to regularly chop off my onions so now I mulch them with straw no weeds holds the moisture in and no sliced onions

As I'm not too keen on weeding I decided a year or two ago not to have any on weeds my plot  and it has mostly worked out quite well  ::)

When I sow seeds I place a stick / marker at each end of the row and tie coloured string onto the sticks. This marks the exact line of the seed row. I make sure the seeds are sown directly in-line with the string.

Anything that comes up either side of the string is swiped through carefully with a swoe. Hand weeding the along the line as soon as anything shows green leaves me with a clean, weed-free, row of seedlings. (But you do need to know what the seedlings look like to avoid pulling the wrong ones!!) After that it is easy to nip along the row removing the odd occasional weed that appears...trying to avoid it getting to anything more than its seed leaves.

Providing I keep at it - little and very often - I end up with a mainly weed-free plot.  ;)  :)

I have found with the combination of the annual weed seed left by the previous plot holder, the annual seed blown over to my plot by neighbours, the stuff that grow up from the imported horse pooh, that weeding is never ending!  Have also found that hoeing is very inefficient (IMHO).  it might chop off the tops or even pull out small seedlings altogether but they invariably either reroot or grow back within a few days.  so I hand weed as much as I can because the patch stays weed free-ish for longer.  plus that way I don't remove onions, leeks or peas (or anything else!  coz I'm a bit short sighted and uncoordinated anyway and put a hoe in my hands and I'm a killer!!
