double yolk . Is one hen prone to laying them
« on: June 11, 2009, 08:08 »
morning all .

Had my first double yolker this morning laid by one of my baker browns i believe . I was told that although this is most common in new layers as basically its a mistake  i also heard that sometimes certain hens can be prone to laying them . When i find my phone memory card converter i will post a pic . What are your folks experiences with double yolkers . Many thanks

I've had the odd one but I believe they are not very good for the hen.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If the egg is huge it could lead on to a prolapse if she were to have trouble pushing it out :(

The only major thing is her laying life span will be less, as a hen only has a set number of eggs in her (like us ladies) so if two are coming out at the same time all the time she will have a shorter laying life :)

Once of my geese is more prone to double yolkers but they do generally only happen with any regularity in the first laying season, from my experience :) Although you may still get the odd one when they get older they are not as frequent :)

Jessica used to lay double yolkers a lot (at least once a fortnight) but since winter we've only had one.
they must grow out of it....

My Black Rock lays them on a regular basis, but she's only been laying for about a month.  She's a really big girl though. :)
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

one of mine lays lots of double yolkers. She's quite young and also a bit irregular and i guess that's the reason. They are enormous so i shall watch out for the potential for prolapse.

A few weeks back we had our first triple yolker, but don't like getting them too often as like the others have said they run out of eggs quicker.
