Relocating a gooseberry bush
« on: June 07, 2009, 19:16 »
As well as daft blackberries, I also have a daft gooseberry bush...

Last year is was a huge sprawling mess, and although I harvested a million and one red goosegogs it was overtaking everything else, so in October I took the loppers to it and hacked it back to within 6ins of the ground... (not exactly ideal I know, but) and hoped for the best.  This year it has really started to grow strongly again.  I removed all of the flower buds, so it could concentrate on growing stems.

But...

It is still in a daft place.

How easy are gooseberry bushes to move?  Will they tolerate being moved?  Could I actually put it into a container (a big one ;))

I'm not sure about a container idea, but it should move ok as long as you leave it till autumn and dig up as much of the rootball as you can :) I've moved one  OK in the past

Worth trying but only in the dormant period Nov- Feb
and lifted with as much root as possible

Once lifted you could also take the opportunity to remove lower shoots to leave a clean 'leg' as this will make picking so much easier
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

a container will be fine for it, so long as its big enough, fed, watered and repotted when it needs it - all mine (of necessity) are in containers

Thanks everyone :)

Unfortunately celjaci it has grown as a multistemmed bush/shrub without a central trunk (just like all of the red white and blackcurrant bushes - which aren't supposed to either).

I'm not sure how I could renovate it to be a proper "bush", though I might have a better idea once it is out of the ground :nods:

we moved 2 in the past month - not a good time but they're tough things - move with as much soil as poss to a pre-dug hole and WATER...
