hello all,

I have my carrots sown in between my onions. At the moment they have a fine mesh cloche covering them. The onions are now pushing the top of this cloche so I will be removing it today. I will replace with a tall barrier around the plants to keep the carrot fly at bay. My question is concerning onion fly. If the onions aren't covered from above should I expect to have to deal with onion fly? I don't really know much about them. Have people found it to be a common problem? If so do you have any other tips to keep them off? (I am organic gardening).

Posted this on another thread, I read that alternating rows carrots and onions is a good why of "eliminating" both carrot fly and onion fly.

Seems that carrot fly is put off by the smell of onions and onion fly is put off by the smell of carrots.

Not sure of the truth of this but here's hoping it's correct.

I've planted my carrots and onions together this year again but with a difference I choose to sow the carrot fly resistant type though that may be my down fall. While they are less likely to attract carrot fly. They must also be less able to deter onion fly.
I am watching carefully what happens.
