My garlic looks like leeks, please help
« on: June 06, 2009, 19:53 »
Dear all and every,
We planted some garlic last year in November.  Early Purple Wight, Solent Wight and Iberian Wight.  They came up fine and have lots of green leaves.  We dug one up at the weekend as the advice was to take them out next month and we wondered how they were doing (impatient, I know) and it looked, for all the world, like a leek.  There is no bulb or anything remotely resembling one.

Please, any advice welcome or hints and tips on what to do now.  I don't know whether the plants just need a bit longer in the soil or if there's been some sort of drastic occurance during growing.

I look forward to hearing from anyone that has some info.

thanks, K xx

Wpuld you like me to go round to the Garlic Farm this weekend and see if they are having problems?  It will only cost you how much lunch I can eat in the cafe.  My garlic  from the farm are all throwing up flowers. Donations to the lunch fund can be sent to ...................

Leave them in the ground. >:( >:( >:( >:(
Wait until 2/3 of the leaves have wilted, don't count the lowest ones as they will have come to the end of their useful time by now. ??? ???

Think that the "normal" harvest time is end of July and August.

Why is everyone pulling garlic up???

g,day kirsty sounds like bolting, premature bolting (running to seed) may occur if maturity groups are sown out of sequence or season.goodluck.

The leaves on my garlic are starting to dry off, some of them are looking nice and plump but others are a bit on the small side. another couple of weeks or so I will harvest them :)
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

I pull some of my Garlic from late May to use as "Green Garlic".
It is milder than they later ones and you can use the whole plant.

Being on the South Coast (Bournemouth) my garlic which I planted Nov 08 is drying in the shed ... It got realy bad rust so i dug them up.

Its the first time Ive grown the stuff, some were massive and others were quite small but all had a bulb...

I gave them a little feed dried blood, fish & bone 70gms/Msq just after I weeded the patch.

It worked for me but Im still a big Learner

hope you get to the root of your problem ... no pun intended

Flaming JUNE.....How many broad beans can a man eat ..!
