GOOSEBERRIES
« on: June 06, 2009, 18:44 »
We enjoyed the first picking of gooseberries last week - first a sticky goosegog cake then gooseberry fool.

Looking forward to more gooseberry delights this week.

Am I alone in thinking how underrated and under valued the humble gooseberry is?

Rarely seen in shops, rarely used in commercial food processing they must be virtually unknown to millions - but how easy and how versatile they are !

Do we have to wait for a celebrity chef to declare them 'sexy'?
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I love a good crumble, and it looks like i will only get enough goosegogs for one this year as the old bush is looking a bit tired. The clones are coming on nicely though.
I decided not to freeze any gogs this year anyway  ;) they`re just not as good as fresh ones.

Celjaci you're absolutely spot on - goosgogs are underrated and it's such a shame as they're a wonderful fruit. I bought some at my local greengrocers last summer and that was the first time I'd seen them in the shops for years. We used to eat bucketfuls of them when I was young, along with red and blackcurrants, and then damsons later, and again, I can't remember the last time I saw those for sale. This year I'm a lucky girl as I've inherited goosgogs and currants at my allotment and an enormous damson tree - it's like being 10 years old again (except for the wrinkles!!).

ditto, so underrated. Local markets sell them, but again people are too keento pick them before they reach peak ripeness, hence their unfair reputation. imho they are unlikely to become in favour as they cannot be grown commercially in this country due to high labour costs. We have a tremendous gooseberry heritage stretching back donkeys years and i grow about 6 varieties. long live the gooseberry.
