Red alert toms - pick out top?
« on: June 06, 2009, 08:14 »
My red alert bush toms are coming on a treat, huge amount of trusses with flowers / fruit and a lot of foliage.  Question:  is there a max number of trusses I should allow to form and should I nip out the top to halt growth?  They are in mini plastic greenhouse, growing in big tom bags, watering each day, leaving door open, and feeding once a week.

Cheers.

I grow lots of bush tommys. The advantage is you do next to nothing to assist growth.
So just let em go add a little feed and eat like sweets.

I have a similar question for my tomatoes. I'm growing 'marmande' tomatoes in a greenhouse in grow bags. How many trusses should i be looking to grow per plant?

Look on this page  I found by using info tab at top and typing tomato in box :)
The info on 'stopping' is about half way down the page

Coolio, thanks.  I'll just leave them.  Cant believe how much easier they are to grow - 1st time with bush variety.  Also cant believe how quick they are to fruit - some looking not far off already, and bear in mind this is central (freezing & wet) scotland  :tongue2:

Ta for advice...

Red alert is an early ripening variety as is gold nugget.  Gold nugget is cordon variety though.  You're lucky my red alert aren't fruiting yet but we are eating the gold nugget which is lovely bit like a yellow gardeners delight taste.
