Will any seaweed make compost or does it have to be a specific species ?.also are you allowed to just help yourselve to it off of the beach?

any kind ofseaweed will do , soak it over night to remove the salt , then leave on heap to rot down until spring time ,

There might be bylaws about cutting seaweed but if you gather it from the high water line you should not have a problem, apart from the smell.

I've never wahed off the salt and its been Ok  :D

We gathered it off the beach last Oct/Nov and spread it over part of the allotment, with horse muck over a similar area.  By spring, the horse muck had partially broken down and was easy to dig in, whereas the seaweed was really difficult and we ended up scraping it off and leaving in a heap and using it as a mulch between plants later.  It has now pretty well disappeared. 

In future, I think we will just put in on the compost heap at intervals - easy as we live yards from the sea.  I was intending to soak it - not sure that salt would be all that good for the garden - but if sunshineband hasn't had a problem ...  Has anyone else got views on to soak or not to soak?

as i posted before heligan gardens use it without washing, may even deter slugs.....you could be lucky :)
