Gooseberry bush from cuttings
« on: June 04, 2009, 12:55 »
I took some cuttings from gooseberry bushes on the unused plot adjacent to mine last year and most have taken.  Although the plants are still only miniature bushes, they have fruit on them and I chuffed to bits at my success.  What I want to know is how and when do I prune my new bushes and will they be OK if I dig them up and relocate them later- they're too close together at the moment.
Cheers

Well done on your crop - always rewarding to see a cutting develop.

Others may advise you differently, but as they are so young, I'd leave pruning till late autumn or winter even. It is possible to move them, and recommended, as they need air to circulate round them to avoid disease, but ensure you take a good ball of soil around the roots when you do.

You may find that the bush will hibernate for the following year and not produce any fruit, as is often the case with a newly planted bush as it gets over the shock and settles in.

Hate to say it as you've done so well, but I'd remove any forming fruits this year to allow the plants to concentrate their energy on new growth & root formation. Sorry.

Thanks for the advice, folks.  I'll forego my goosegog pies this year and spread out the bushes later on in the year.  With luck I'll have plenty of fruits next year.

I am wanting to make new plants from my fruit bushes (I have no idea how old the exisitng plants are and thought new plants over the next couple of years might be a good idea.
Would you just run over how you went about it, what time of year, any particular way you did it.

Thanks
JRRD
