when is Garlic ready & sweetcorn 'blocks'?
« on: June 04, 2009, 10:19 »
I planted Garlic for the first time last year and it looks nearly ready to harvest - how will I know its really ready?  I don't want to waste it - it looks brilliant?

What do the books mean when they say plant sweetcorn in 'blocks'?

thanks for the help. :D

Garlic - the leaves will go yellow when it's ready to harvest.

As regards sweetcorn, you plant like this (18" between each plant):

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *
*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Not like this:

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  * *  *  *  *  *  *  *  * *  *  *  *  *  *  *  * *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I liked the drawing - simple and effective.  I understand now.  I am studying about communication skills and your advice has been the only bit I have understood all day.  I consider it an achievement.  I shall go fourth and plant sweetcorn.

thanks very much

Thank you!

It doesn't have to be a perfect square, this is the block I planted this morining:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

It's done that way to assist pollination.

But you knew that.  ;)
