No eggs...
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:23 »
Please can anyone help me? I have a silver sussex hen, we have had her for about 4mths. She was laying beautifully until she went broody. Then we had no eggs for about 4-5 weeks. Recently I found two soft shelled eggs at night in the house. I assumed they were from her as she obviously hasn't been eating very much. Since then, that was about a week ago, she is back to hr normal self, no longer broody, eating and drinking well, but no signs of any eggs. Could she be eggbound? If so what should I do? Should I give her a little longer? Thanks for your help, Tatty

Have a feel around (or if you are brave inside the vent) soft shelled egg laying can cause problems if some of the soft shell is left in the vent. It can cause peritonitis.
But it can be a few weeks after being broody for them to start to lay regularly again.

Hensington I would not suggest anyone check internally for an egg.
You would/should be able to feel it externally.

Do you offer oyster shell to your bird permanently ?

Agree with hensington, give her a little more time, a broody hen will take a little while to  build up to laying properly again, I am sure she will  :)be fine!
