i ask this question because i have had my pol chickens for about a year and after they initially started to lay i had some health problems with them and didn't get any eggs at all for about 5 months , i am now averageing about 9/10 a day from 12 hens , but my neighbour gets 11/12 from his dozen hens. is it possible some are not laying or is my average a decent result ?

9 to 10 a day sounds about right for 12 hens.

they'll take it in turns to have their day off (rather like postmen....)

Egg production in chickens depends on breed, Pure bread or Hybrid.

Hybrids are breed for the amount of eggs a year.

Remember that a chicken is born with the amount of eggs it will ever produce (Like a woman).  So a hybrid may produce allot of eggs over a short period where a Pure breed will produce the same amount of eggs roughly over a longer period.

the chickens are hybrids but they stopped laying for almost 5 months due to coughing , runny nose's and diarhea they are ok now but will them eggs be lost or still in the bird like some people seem to say

If she aint layed them then they is still there.
