Advice on my chilli plants
« on: June 02, 2009, 20:33 »
Hi All,

Am after some advice on my jalapeno and cayenne plants which are now on about the 5th - 6th set of leaves and have been growing nicely on the windowsil. I've moved them out over the past week during the day time to take advantage of some of the warm weather that we've had.

I noticed a few days ago that the newer sets of leaves towards the top of the plant appear to be crinkled and are not formed smooth like the larger leaves towards the middle and base of the plant.

I have checked the plants and found a fair few aphids which I think are greenfly. I've brushed them off but I am not sure if it would have been these that has caused this problem or whether it's possible that the full sun position I had them in may have scorched them??

Any ideas what it might be?

My money is on it being the aphids to blame.  Clear them with some dilute washing up liquid in a spray or a proprietary bug killer.
Cheese makes everything better.

I agree with Ice  :)

Thanks  for your advice, ive dusted them off and I shall spray them tomorrow to make sure they are all gone. Do I need to remove the damaged leaves or should I leave them?

Leave them and see what happens and then make a decision.

"I shall spray them tomorrow to make sure they are all gone"

The spray I use has a limit on the number of times it can be used on a given type of crop, during the season, which you may want to check in the Destructions :)

Got the same problem here on one or two plants. Brushed them off for now and waiting to see what happens. What's the washing up lqd trick?

In my experience you'll get deformed leaves like that when they are attacked by aphids when they are still very small. They grow on ok, just look a bit dodgy!

I used a diluted mix of water/fairy liquid which works fine. They needed a spray every 4-5 days to keep the fly in check. I still have some on them at the moment but the foilage is so big/strong I don't think it will cause any harm now. A friendly spider has thrown a small web up on one of the plants which is also catching a few of them :)
