Help required please with runner beans
« on: June 02, 2009, 13:44 »
Hi,  I'm quite a novice to growing veg, however that said I had a really good crop of runner beans last year.  The problem that I have is that I grew my beans in seed trays and then planted them out a week ago.  Almost immediately a couple of them started to wilt and die and now out of 40 plants I only have 2 remaining.  My mum says that it could be mice eating the bean that they grew from.  Has anyone else any ideas and is it too late now to grow another tray from seed and plant them out?

Thanks for your help - would really like to plant some more if poss as canes look a bit lonely with no beans to climb them!

Teresa
Wish I was at home with the chickens!

Grow some more now.  Your crop will be later but you will get some beans :D

Definately grow some now, maybe put up some netting until they are a bit bigger.  Did they totally disappear or where they nibbled down or pulled up?

If they wilted and died then possibly it could have been that they where not hardened off if you started them indoors or you may have inadvertently damaged the stem or root system when you planted them out.

Thanks everyone, planted another lot in tray indoors last night, fingers crossed.  Once they are up I shall leave them outside to harden off this time before planting them.

after watering my invisible ones (forgot to put seed in pots :nowink:) i put in a new lot  but they have taken ages to come through and after 10 days only just showing but the french beans have come through quicker  - think I'll be getting a late crop this year as well.
