Ideal ph for brassica bed
« on: May 31, 2009, 14:40 »
I took a quick Ph reading of my brassica bed the other day and I came up with a dark green indicating alkaline. Is this good for brassicas? Or are they the ones that really enjoy acid soil?

Brassicas like lime / alkalinity
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Brassicas actually like a soil pH of 5.8 - 6.0 which is slightly acidic BUT the club root fungus HATES alkaline soil.  Brassicas will tollerate alkaline soil so we add lime to reduce the risk of club root.

I also add lime since my soil is slightly acid.  In addition to this I occasionally sprinkle some Epsom salts and water them in. In fact, I add some to most of the plants.
Pause, be still and observe the world with all your senses - you will gain much!

I added wood ash in addition to manure over the winter. Not entirely sure what wood ash does that lime doesn't, but I'm definitely going to start using it this year. The brassicas seem to be doing really well so I must have done something right
