I've had a look at yabba's advice last year on taking cuttings. I've bunged half my "acquired"  tubers straight in the ground and they're beginning to shoot, but have 4 large tubers in boxes covered with soil so I can take cuttings.
How many leaves/how tall should they be before I try them and how many shoots from each tuber can I expect?
last question - once I've taken off the shoots for rooting what should I do with the old tubers?

We take cuttings ( directly below a leaf joint ), when there are a couple of "open" leaves above the cut

You can get a shedload of cuttings off each tuber but they tend to get a tad weaker each time so stop when you have enough plants.

Once you've finished just bung the tubers in the ground

thanks yabba. it looks as though you leave part of the tuber exposed. not completely buried - is that right?

You can bury it if you want, but to take cuttings you only need to give it enough soil to root in
