Dahlia cuttings
« on: May 31, 2009, 11:35 »
I've had a look at yabba's advice last year on taking cuttings. I've bunged half my "acquired"  ;) tubers straight in the ground and they're beginning to shoot, but have 4 large tubers in boxes covered with soil so I can take cuttings.
How many leaves/how tall should they be before I try them and how many shoots from each tuber can I expect?
last question - once I've taken off the shoots for rooting what should I do with the old tubers?
Thank you!

We take cuttings ( directly below a leaf joint ), when there are a couple of "open" leaves above the cut

( if you click that image it'll lead to a couple more )

You can get a shedload of cuttings off each tuber but they tend to get a tad weaker each time so stop when you have enough plants.

Once you've finished just bung the tubers in the ground ;)

thanks yabba. it looks as though you leave part of the tuber exposed. not completely buried - is that right?

You can bury it if you want, but to take cuttings you only need to give it enough soil to root in ;)
