vit b deficiancy in chooks?
« on: May 30, 2009, 20:58 »
has anyone heard about chooks getting vit b deficiant?  As you may or may not be aware, my cockrel, Harry, has a bit or a blue tinge to the tips of his comb...apparently my dad has mentioned it to a few people, and one of them commented that one of their cockrels suffered with this, and she was told to stick his beak in marmite, (high in vit B for those of you that dont eat it...*yum yum yum*) and it will boost his vit b levels...hey presto...no blue comb!!

what ya think??? ??? ???

Everyone ought to have a bit of marmite in their life! Might smear a bit on some bread rather than dipping his whole beak in!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Not sure that the symptoms you describe are Vit B deficiencey but more likely to be a respiritory problem but he'll love the marmite  :D

had considered making like a gravy for the layers pellets....not sure which he would be more likely to enjoy...marmite mash or marmite on toast...lol...

still no other symptoms... no sneezing etc... will give it a go and see what happens!

well...took him his marmite on toast, soaked with warm water so he got a nice gravy, and threw in a few meal worms just cos... he gobbled up the lot...had a right time of it keeping his girl friend out of it!! gave in and let her have a mouthful when he had had his full. actually his comb looked less blue today so thats good news at least! and he still likes his food..so yay to that too!

I saw a link that suggested a link between circulation and vit B12. Don't know if that was spurious or known though  :)

Glad he's looking better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12

Good old wikipedia ! :D

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood...

Apparently, long been used in the treatment of pernicious aneamia. This applies to humans of course, but I'm guessing poultry blood is much the same sort of stuff.
