Plants for a sunny porch
« on: May 30, 2009, 15:02 »
Any suggestions for a plant to grow in a fully glazed, south facing porch?

Must be able to survive full sun now and low temperatures ( but not freezing ) in winter so probably similar to an unheated conservatory

Tried a lemon verbena but it fried, scented geraniums did fine but could do with something taller - up to 6ft tall and 2-3 ft across.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Tomato?  Some peppers get that big and you can cut them back in winter and they regrow. Grape vine - they are a variety that cope outside in winter then I'd have thought they'd be okay.

I don't think many things like being boiled and then frozen and will look good all year around.

Nah. Cannabis prefers dappled shade and  will not abide the cold. Not that I would know..
Just a guess.
I am just trying a Bougainvillea , been in the house about 5 years, flowered every year and doing well. lots of new growth. I have just cut it back and repotted it, read about it and seems they are OK outside while its warm but not in winter.. Depends whereabouts you are as well, southern climate is warmer .. I am in east midlands.
I will try this outside this summer, but probably plant it in the greenhouse as its permanent home.

why not try a lemon tree? extra plus of fab perfume and instant gin and tonic accessory! Pruning keeps the size in check and the new foliage is a gorgeous purple.

Thanks for all the suggestions - might try a bouganvillea if I can find one at the right price
