looks like the pupae of some sort of flying insect. Maybe a solitary bee?

thanks ,it looks like it has a sort of 'sting' in its tail so you could be right ... so you dont think her soil is in need of treatment then? or is it?

Completely wild guess , a chafer chrysalis. I can only find photo`s of the larva and the adult.

Whatever you do - don't put "Yellow Bug" into Google Images.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I thought it might be a chafer chrysalis... but it also might be some sort of bee.

I can't recall the name but there is a bee that lays its eggs into holes in sandy soil. This particular bee does not live in a massive community but in single holes.

I can remember taking some children camping and the camp-field was plastered with them appearing all over the place.

 thanks for all your suggestions.
been googling ......i know you said i shouldnt, but i typed 'yellow bug'::) and have ruled out the possibility of the pupa of a VW :D ..... the closest match was a solitary bee pupa,

ps i got stung once by some bees .... £2.50 for a jar of honey! ;)

Red Mason bees or Miner bees live in sand holes (or any other suitable hole) and they don't have stings. They are also very important pollinators.

That's what it looks like to me too. (but bees, miner, leaf cutter, etc) also look like that at that stage, so it depends where you find them! Chafer bugs are a bit bigger than bees though.

Keep it in a pot of moist earth with a ventilated lid and see what hatches. Keep it out of the sun, else it will cook. Keep looking, so you can release it when it hatches and find some grub

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I reckon aelf has cracked it.....

"Red Mason bees or Miner bees live in sand holes (or any other suitable hole) and they don't have stings. They are also very important pollinators."

I am nearly 100% sure that it is a Miner bee.... they are quite amazing to watch as they nip in and out of almost invisible holes especially when there are dozens of them nesting in the same piece of open, sandy ground....each with its own frontdoor and home.
